Today, Wednesday, the Public Security Directorate announced that it will host the International Women’s Peg Picking Championship (Grand Prix), which will be held in Petra from 22 to 24 of this month.
The leader of the Public Security Ceremonies Group, Colonel Dr. Muhammad Al-Zawaida, said in a press conference that the program and activities of the tournament organized by the Directorate are distinguished by being for female jockeys, and 14 countries of the world participate in it, adding that the sport of picking pegs is one of the ancient equestrian sports that express the history and culture of countries. The Public Security team is one of the oldest international teams, and represents Jordan among the countries affiliated with the officially recognized international federation for this sport, based in the Sultanate of Oman.
He pointed out that the Public Security Directorate has made all the necessary arrangements, in cooperation with the Petra Tourism Development Region Authority and the competent authorities; To make the tournament a success and to highlight the bright image of the Kingdom and its ability to host various tournaments and sports activities and to provide all requirements for success for this sporting event.
The Director of the Directorate of Information and Community Police, Colonel Mahmoud Al-Sheyab, indicated that the Public Security Directorate, since the start of the merger process, and what followed in the stage of development and modernization, has followed a strategy that supports Jordanian youth and sports in general.
He added that the directorate is proud of its athletes who stood on the global podiums and contributed to raising the nation’s flag high, pointing out that this tournament is an extension of this strategy, as well as an expression of the originality of equestrian and its various sports in the Jordanian culture and the history of public security since the establishment of the Kingdom.
For her part, the Secretary-General of the Royal Equestrian Federation Noor Al-Rifai expressed her thanks and appreciation to the Public Security Directorate for its constant support for equestrian sports, which contributed to the development and preservation of this sport, and the expansion of its practice, as one of the oldest sports that embodies our local and Arab culture, stressing the importance of This tournament will be the first to host more tournaments in the future.
It is noteworthy that the Women’s World Championships in picking pegs will witness the participation of 42 competitors from 14 Arab and foreign countries, namely: Jordan, Oman, Sudan, Russia, Belarus, Britain, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Norway, India, South Africa, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia.
On the sidelines of the tournament, an international training course specialized in the sport of picking up stakes will be held for international coaches, a course for obtaining the silver badge in arbitration, as well as a course for obtaining the golden badge in international arbitration in this competition, under the supervision of the International Picking Federation.
The tournament, which will be held in cooperation with the Petra Tourism Development Region Authority, will have a large international and local presence, and wide coverage of its competitions in the city of Petra, because the city represents a Jordanian symbolism as a unique tourist and cultural destination.
